A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Safety and Healing

Infectious disease specialists at St. Vincent’s are physicians who have had additional training in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. These specialists contribute to the care of patients as part of multidisciplinary teams, providing examination, conducting laboratory tests and performing procedures such as biopsies and needle aspirations that benefit from their expertise.

Patient Safety is Priority One

As experts in a vital subspecialty of internal medicine at St. Vincent’s, infectious disease specialists are a key part of one of the hospital’s many great achievements: controlling the threat to patients of hospital infections. With their ability to examine, prescribe and treat patients who contract infection, our infectious disease specialists often work closely with surgeons, radiologists and many other experts to design safe, effective treatment plans for their patients.

Types of Infections Include:

  • open wounds
  • chronic infections
  • blood-related infections
  • bone, joint, skin, and soft tissue infections
  • diabetes-related infections
  • HIV
  • Lyme disease
  • cancer and cancer chemotherapy related infections
  • immunodeficiency-related infections
  • cellulitis
  • Tropical and travel-related infections
  • pneumonia
  • endocarditis

Specialized Healing

Specialized treatment of wounds that do not heal is provided by St. Vincent’s Center for Wound Healing. Your physician can schedule an appointment for a consultation with the Center’s team, or you may do so yourself.

Infection Protection

Each year, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports which strain of flu (influenza) the population should be vaccinated against in the U.S. The flu virus causes infection, as does pneumonia, and individuals - in particular, children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems - are urged to receive vaccination.

St. Vincent’s Urgent-Care Walk In Centers provide flu and pneumonia shots at their various locations, the cost of which is generally covered by Medicare, Medicaid and/or private insurance plans.
